Area artist, photographer to create official congressional portrait of 14-term congressman

As 14-term veteran U.S. Rep. Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-N.Y.) steps down as chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, artist Vincent Chiaramonte and photographer Jim Spelman will be sent to New York City Thursday, Jan. 27, to photograph Towns for his official congressional oil painting portrait.
Chiaramonte, who received the commission to paint the official portrait with Spelman, will capture preliminary sketches/studies in a portrait photography session at Towns’ New York office.
Spelman returns from London to his Midwest roots to shoot as Chiaramonte returns from his Michigan Avenue studio in Chicago to paint Towns’ oil painting portrait in his Rockford studio.
Spelman has photographed worldwide editorial, portrait and advertising campaigns. Chiaramonte has studied at the Academy of Art in Chicago, has been commissioned by organizations, leaders of industry, academia, sports, clergy and politicians including, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, and most recently, U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Ill.).
It is an honor for both Chiaramonte (http://www.prtraits.com/chiaramonte/chiaramonte.htm [1]) and Spelman (www.jimspelmanphotography.com [2]) to be chosen for Towns’ congressional portrait.
As a senior member in Congress, Towns is a member of several congressional caucuses, including the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Caribbean Caucus, the Congressional Urban Caucus, and the Congressional Labor and Working Families Caucus.
