St. Bernadette Catholic School hosts open house Jan. 30

According to Elizabeth Heitkamp, principal of St. Bernadette Catholic School on Rockford’s southwest side: “The area we serve is having a rough time financially, as are some of the parents of our children. To help them, we sought out cost reductions and talked to the (Rockford) Diocese Office of Education. As a result, beginning in 2011, we will be reducing our tuition by as much as 40 percent for current and new students, and we promise to hold that rate through the 2012 school year.
“Unlike a public school, we are not tuition-free,” Heitkamp added. “However, we have great educators, a balanced program, small class sizes, strictly enforced discipline, and offer students individual attention not available in many other schools.”
In making the announcement, Heitkamp admits the tuition reduction is part of a program to turn around decreasing enrollment. “Part of the problem is the changing demographics of the neighborhoods from which we draw,” Heitkamp said.
St. Bernadette draws its students from three ZIP codes—61101, 61102 and 61103. Besides K through eighth-grade, the school has a half-day program for children ages 3 and 4, and a before-and-after school care program from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
“Since we are located across the street from Rockford Memorial Hospital, our programs are attractive to anyone who works for the system and has young children,” Heitkamp said.
As part of its marketing program, St. Bernadette School is hosting an open house at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 30. Although it is a Catholic school, it has an open-door policy regarding students of other faiths or no faith.
