Book drive aims to create a love of reading, boost early literacy

From press release

Rockford Public Schools is hosting a drive to collect 2,275 books—one for each student in the Early Childhood Educational Program. The goal is to boost literacy levels and emphasize the importance of reading at home.

“Early language skills lay the foundation for reading ability and school readiness, and those skills result from adults talking and reading to their children,” said Jenny Karlson, assistant principal of early childhood curriculum. “The attention students receive during ‘read-alouds’ creates a positive association between books and reading.”

New and gently-used books for children from 3 to 6 years old can be dropped off at the Rockford Public Schools Administration Building, 201 S. Madison St., the Rockford Public Library Main Branch, 215 N. Wyman St., and these Starbucks locations: 6239 E. State St., 3001 N. Perryville Road, or 7474 E. State St.

The effort will continue until all of the books are collected. For more information or to make a monetary donation, contact Marsha Sisney at (815) 966-3271.
