Design a T-shirt for WNIJ
From press release
DEKALB, Ill.—Public radio station 89.5-WNIJ invites listeners to enter a “T-Shirt Design Contest” to celebrate 20 years of broadcasting. As a listener-supported service, it’s especially fitting for the WNIJ audience to participate in the process of creating a memento. One design will be chosen for screen printing on special-edition 20th anniversary WNIJ T-shirts this spring. The winning artist will also enjoy several other perks and accolades as the station continues to celebrate the milestone throughout the year.
WNIJ encourages listeners of all artistic skill levels to enter the T-Shirt Design Contest by creating an image that best represents the station. There is no cost to enter. Entries must be received at 801 N. First St., DeKalb, IL 60115, by 4:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 28. Complete rules and information about how to submit materials can be found at http://www.wnij.org.
Though Northern Public Radio history can be traced back to 1954, when WNIU signed on the air at 10 watts, the broadcasting service of Northern Illinois University expanded to include a second FM signal in1991. “WNIJ” was officially born April 28 of that year, and the programming previously provided by WNIU was split into two distinct services. WNIU became an all-classical music station, and at the time, WNIJ provided National Public Radio (NPR) news, jazz and entertainment.
Twenty years later, 89.5-WNIJ remains the market’s NPR News affiliate, blanketing northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin through auxiliary signals covering Rockford, Freeport, Sterling and LaSalle. Northern Public Radio itself is a charter member of NPR, a 40-year-old network now reaching more than 27 million listeners a week. In addition to airing NPR news programs, Morning Edition and All Things Considered, WNIJ carries entertainment programming such as Car Talk, A Prairie Home Companion, and nine hours of locally-hosted blues on the weekends.
