Turtle Tap robbery suspect in custody after 90-minute standoff

The suspect Beloit, Wis. police say robbed the Turtle Tap Sunday, Feb. 13, and a Beloit gas station two days earlier, is in custody.

Ernest Sanwick, age unknown, was arrested at approximately 8:55 a.m. Monday, inside the Del-Mae Motel in Beloit.

Believing Sanwick was armed, Beloit Police officials were assisted by the SWAT team while negotiators attempted to order him out of the hotel.

After a more than 90-minute standoff, Sanwick tried to flee the scene by climbing out of a bathroom window. He was later arrested without incident.

The Turtle Tap holdup was reported Sunday at about 8: 30 a.m. Police also allege Sanwick robbed the CITGO gas station at 1888 Shopiere Rd., Friday, Feb. 11,  shortly after midnight.

Sanwick is believed to have been armed in both robberies. An undetermined amount of cash was stolen from each location. No injuries were reported.

As of press time, Sanwick was being held at the Rock County Jail pending an initial court hearing.

It is not known if he has an attorney.
