Local high schoolers excel in Truth Talk debate

Teams representing Rockford East, Rockford Jefferson and Rockford Roosevelt high schools prevailed at Truth Talk IV, the annual debate sponsored by the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity at Heartland Community Church.
East scored ahead of Guilford High School in a discussion of the question, “Have schools done enough to eradicate bullying?” Jefferson emerged on top in a faceoff with the Academic Career Education (ACE) High School over the question, “Should students be guaranteed a free education?” Roosevelt defeated Auburn High School in answering the question, “Do violent video games lead to increased violence in children?”
Winning teams took home trophies. Debate judges Karen Portis, Leonard White and Mike Williams also awarded medals to the top-performing member of each team: Anthony Harden, ACE; Ta’naysha Smith, Auburn; Ciera Shaw, East; Sahand Nuhivand, Guilford; Damario Fair, Jefferson; and Tashala Watkins, Roosevelt.
