Education researcher encourages public to be ‘cautious’ of school reform, do homework on charter schools

Watchdogs for Ethics in Education (WEE) brought independent education researcher Noel Hammatt back to Rockford Wednesday, March 16.
In his remarks before a crowd of about 50 at Unitarian Universalist Church, Hammatt encouraged the public to become informed participants in shaping Rockford Public School District 205’s future.
Hammatt said individuals should be “cautious” of school reform and do their own research on charter schools and other reform efforts.
According to Hammatt, school reformers promise change and then quickly close schools or turn them into charter schools if that change cannot be accomplished. He also said reformers operate under the guise of putting kids first and claim to be supported by data and research.
Hammatt—who was on the school board in East Baton Rouge, La., when Rockford Public School District 205 Superintendent Dr. LaVonne M. Sheffield worked for Louisiana’s Recovery School District—will also speak at a Concerned Citizens of Rockford rally at 6:30 p.m., Monday, March 21, at Court Street United Methodist Church, 215 N. Court St.
Hammatt also has experience as a teacher, served as president of the Louisiana School Boards Association, and was the keynote speaker at a Feb. 22 “Rally to Save Our Public Schools.” To read about his Feb. 21-22 visit to Rockford, click here [2].
