The indoor track and field season is in high gear, and several area teams took to the track at the Illinois Prep Top Times Indoor Classic at Illinois Wesleyan University.
After a strong indoor performance last year from several NIC-10 athletes, it appears many are ready to build upon that success.
The biggest winner and the biggest surprise of the meet was Belvidere North’s Cetrena Simmons. She won the Class AA high jump event at 5 feet, 6 inches.
But that was a surprise, as she easily beat Springfield’s Sarah Maxson, who was considered the overwhelming favorite and one of the top jumpers in the state.
Teammate Baily Murphy also finished ninth in the high jump and had a 10th-place finish in the pole vault.
Belvidere North boys also did well in the distance events.
The team of Will Crocker, Bruyn Yunk, Garrett Lee and Paul Zeman won the 4-by-800-meter relay race. Tyler Yunk and Paxson Menard finished second and third, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run.
Zeman also won the 1,600-meter run, while Crocker finished second in the 800-meter run for the Blue Thunder.
East’s Logan Tillmon also proved herself well in the IPTT event. The E-Rabs’ standout finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles and also eighth in the 200-meter dash.
In the Class AAA events, the NIC-10 also performed well.
The Harlem Huskies led the way for area teams in the high classes with several strong finishes. Autumn Miller finished fourth in the shot put, while Cory Householder finished fourth in the 55-meter dash. Leah Rafferty also came in ninth in the 3,200-meter run.
Elsewhere for the NIC-10, Steve Harzell of Jefferson finished fifth in the long jump, while Boylan’s Mary Katherine Kladar finished ninth in the high jump.
