Birds and Bats: Audubon Society announces 30th Annual Banquet and program

Northwest Illinois Audubon Society announces its 30th Annual Banquet to be held the evening of Thursday, April 14, at Embury United Methodist Church, 515 S. Galena Ave. in Freeport, Ill.
Special guest will be Rob Miles, who will present a program about “Live Bat Encounter!” Miles is director of the Organization for Bat Conservation at the Cranbrook Institute of Science. He co-authored the book Stokes Beginner’s Guide to Bats and has appeared on several television shows including The Today Show and Late Nigh With Conan O’Brien.
Not only will he enlighten our knowledge about these fascinating flying mammals, but he will also bring live bats, including the largest bat in the world, the flying fox bat.
This year’s program will be presented upstairs in the Embury United Methodist sanctuary. Handicapped-accessible elevators are available.
The silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m., the meal will be served at 6 p.m., and the program begins at 7:15 p.m. For those attending the program only, sanctuary doors open at 7 p.m. Parking is available in one parking lot off Pleasant Street and two lots off Iroquois (including handicapped entrance).
The menu will consist of Arnold’s Farm pasture-raised turkey with all the trimmings, sweet corn from Drake’s Farm, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry salad, bread, and a selection of delectable desserts home-baked by Audubon members.
A variety of beverages will be served including fair-trade, shade-grown Audubon coffee, both decaf and regular.
A 25 percent discount will be offered on introductory Audubon Society memberships. The silent auction will help support NIAS Conservation Committee. There will also be an Audubon coffee sale.
The dinner and program price is $12.50 for adults, children younger than 12, free. For program only (pay at the door), the price is $3 for adults, children younger than 12, free. Reservation deadline has been extended to April 8, but call early at (815) 563-4984.
