Rockford Dance Company stages Coppelia April 9 at Coronado

Staff Report

Rockford Dance Company (RDC) will perform the ballet Coppelia beginning at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at Coronado Performing Arts Center.

A break from the sad, romantic ballets of the 19th century, Coppelia is one of the best-known comedy ballets, and the most often performed worldwide. The ballet brought instant fame to its musical composer, Leo Delibes.

The story centers on a beautiful mechanical doll, her creator, Coppelius (who is attempting to bring the doll to life), and a young man (Franz) who, thinking she is human, falls in love with her. Of course, Franz’s bride-to-be has something to say about this.

RDC will feature the talented sisters Bailey and Caitlin Glavan as Swanhilde (the bride-to-be) and Coppelia (the doll), respectively. A popular favorite from the Chicago dance scene, JP Tenuta, will dance the part of Franz. Randall Newsom, RDC alumnus now teaching at Ruth Page School of Dance in Chicago, will dance the role of Dr. Coppelius.

Tickets are $12-$39, and are available at the Coronado, 314 N. Main St., by calling (815) 968-0595 or visiting
