Sports Media: A ‘sweet’ offer from the son of a Chicago Bears great
By Doug Halberstadt
Friday, April 1, was opening day for the Chicago Cubs. In celebration of the event, Walter Payton’s son Jarrett Payton was hosting his daily podcast program live at a place called The Piggery in Chicago.
Prior to the festivities, he posted this on his Facebook page: “Good morning everyone! its opening day here in Chicago! we are live from the Piggery chicago 1625 w irving park Rd.. if your headed to the Cubs game stop by and have a drink! we are giving away Cubs tix for the next 3 home game for FREE! 10am-2pm on www.chicagolandsportsradio.com i have my phone on me so the text line is open xxx-xxx-xxxx. text me about anything sports!”
I immediately sent him a little message about how I was stuck at my office here in Rockford, and as much as I would like to stop by to have a beverage and talk sports, I wouldn’t be able to do so. I wished him good luck with the show, and then more or less half jokingly said, “How about setting some of those tickets aside for us folks out here in Rockford?” I really never expected to get a response.
A few hours later, my phone buzzed. The text was from a number I didn’t recognize. The message said, “Call my show on Monday and we’ll talk some baseball and I’ll see you get those tickets.” Jarrett Payton.
As I write this column, I have yet to make the call. If I can get some free time later, perhaps I will. Not because I want the tickets; I’d get a much bigger charge out of being on his show and talking about the Cubs and Sox opening series with him.
You can listen to Payton’s show from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, at www.chicagolandsportsradio.com.
