Rockford Public School District 205 Superintendent Dr. LaVonne M. Sheffield was served with a defamation lawsuit Thursday morning, April 7.
The suit was filed in Winnebago County Circuit Court by Attorney Dan McGrail on behalf of education researcher Noel Hammatt.
While Hammatt was in Rockford speaking to District 205 parents in February, the lawsuit alleges Sheffield publicly accused him of being racially biased toward minority students.
According to the suit, Sheffield falsely stated that Mr. Hammatt, “distorts data and he believes minority students aren’t as bright, that they can’t learn, and that efforts to teach those children, quote, ‘those children’, and close the achievement gap are essentially a waste of time.”
The complaint alleges that Sheffield recklessly disregarded the truth and placed Hammatt in a false light.
It is unclear if Hammatt is seeking monetary damages.
The former president of the Louisiana School Boards Association, Hammatt said the case is more about protecting the Rockford community and his professional reputation.
“Such public, defamatory statements cannot be left unchallenged,” Hammatt said. “The totally fallacious claims the superintendent made that night in February, during the televised school board meeting, were clearly designed to stifle public participation and to have a chilling effect on those who would dare to question her policies.”
Hammatt, of Baton Rouge, La., works as an independent researcher and public speaker. He has also been an instructor at Louisiana State University.
Sheffield’s accusations in February were similar to statements she made about Hammatt when she was working for the Recovery School District in Louisiana, Hammatt said.
“She accused me of saying minority students–black students–couldn’t learn,” Hammatt said of the exchange. “I told her, ‘Absolutely not. That’s not what I said.’ I noted that there are differences in how students learn because of socio-economic and several other factors. But, she immediately pulled the race card.
“Dr. Sheffield chose to ignore the truth and instead lashed out at in a vicious attack to silence her critics,” Hammatt alleged.
District 205 has not been named in the suit.
“We are suing Dr. Sheffield individually,” McGrail said. “Mr. Hammatt is not seeking any damages from Rockford taxpayers.”
Sheffield was served with the lawsuit at approximately 8:30 a.m., today, outside the Administration Building.
It is not known when Sheffield and Hammatt are scheduled to appear in court.

Thanks for breaking the story[again]. Surely some local talkshow host will squeeze this for a day’s news story. Watch how the local media mavens spin the story. That is why we call you the paper of record. Thanks TRRT;]!
Love it! She finally is being called to the carpet for her behavior.
Go back just a few stories. The rumor has been ‘out thar’ since the day’s of B Butler at a local radio station, more than a year ago. Let’s start a ‘fund’ to buy her out, like O’brien and Neal, and so many lucky souls$$
Can someone PLEASE send a reporter to click a picture of her getting served …
Huh.
Along with the other investigations in which she is a person of interest, it does give one pause as to how many legal proceedings Ms. Sheffield is a party to at any given time.
Someone should stop by her office. We’ve heard that she started packing up her things on Monday….
Thanks for printing the stories the public needs to hear!
I say time for accountability for all her cronies who have terrorized our students, teachers, and staff, as well as ignored the people of this community. They all think they are above the law. And they all seem to think they are running their own corporation. Good riddance to all of them.
Sheffield resigned….as of April 30th.
Dr. Scheffield was not at the meeting that Mr. Hammatt spoke at. I was. The district’s communication officer Mark Bonne was there, too. In no way, shape or form did Mr. Hammatt say anything that resembled what Dr. Scheffield said he said. His remarks were inclusive, hopeful and encouraging. Clearly, he believes that all children can – and should be the given opportunity – to learn.
I agree with Tom. In fact, he was very professional, and refused to say anything about the superintendent. He just wanted the community to be involved, and he wanted all races and creeds to be represented in all matters educational.
Trucker Tom suggests “surely some local talk host will squeeze this for a day’s news story”. Alas,it’s the Trucker, himself, who has raised this subject on WNTA two days running. Sounds like you’re doing the squeezing, Tom. Can you say “disingenuous”?
