South Beloit teachers reach 3-year deal

As teachers in Rockford wait in a state of chaos, those in South Beloit have worked out details of a three-year contract.
The contract is a retroactive deal, basing most of teacher pay on figures from 2009-10. Working off of a soft freeze for the first year, teachers will not receive base pay increases in 2011-12. However, some teachers will be eligible for increases based on experience.
In 2012-13, a hard freeze will be in place– offering no raises. This year, Community Unit School District 320 teachers are eligible for a 4 percent raise.
According to officials, including Superintendent Scott Fisher and Union President Serena Robare, the deal is a fair and realistic compromise in light of the state’s questionable budget.
