To the Editor: No respect for retired teachers from District 205
I am a District 205 graduate and retired teacher.
This year, several of my friends have decided to retire after 30-plus years of dedication to the children, parents and community. Since we had not yet heard anything regarding the annual retirement dinner, I made a telephone call to the Human Resources Department.
To my chagrin, I was told that after many, many years, administration has decided that due to finances, there will be no dinner this year. The evening had been a very special way to show how much we value these caring professionals.
The fact that this event has been terminated is difficult enough for me to try to understand, but the fact that staff members were not even notified just goes to confirm my feelings of how impersonal and cold the current downtown administration has become.
As teachers and parents, we know how important it is to tell our children, “Great job!” Since the District 205 administration has decided not to extend the same courtesy to its retiring staff members, I strongly encourage any and all members of the community to take the time to “Thank a teacher.”
