Sports cuts are expected to be back on the table as Rockford Public School District 205 aims to shave more than $660,000 from its budget next year.
A preliminary report from the Education Committee shows that the sports program could become a tiered program in the 2011-12 school year.
If the school board votes for the plan, teams–and cuts– would be classified by how much revenue each generates for the district. For example, basketball, football and volleyball would be offered on the varsity, junior varsity and freshman levels.
Sports such as baseball, wrestling, softball, bowling and competitive cheer, which generate fewer dollars than teams in the first tier, would see cuts. According to officials, second-tier sports would not field teams on the freshman level.
The third tier would include golf, soccer, tennis, cross country and track and would also not offer freshman teams. Third-tier teams could also be forced to co-op with other schools, depending on the budget.
With a tiered system, some freshman athletes would be forced out of the program if they don’t make jayvee or varsity rosters.
The system would also include cuts at the middle school level, as there would be no sports offered for sixth-graders. Sixth grade students would be forced to wait until entering seventh grade to compete in school-sanctioned junior varsity and varsity programs.
The school board is scheduled to vote on the proposal at its next meeting.
The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 26, when three new members will be seated. As of this report, the meeting is slated to be held again at Ellis Arts Academy, 222 S. Central Ave.
