According to sources close to Rockford Public School District 205, Chief Communications Officer Mark Bonne has resigned.
The news comes eight days after Superintendent Dr. LaVonne Sheffield announced she was leaving the district.
An e-mail sent to Bonne Friday was returned with the following message:
“I will be out of the office for several days beginning Thursday, April 14. If you need immediate assistance, please contact Angela Lundin at 815-966-5299.”
It was later learned Bonne stated that he was leaving the district to avoid becoming a distraction to new leaders. In his resignation letter to Sheffield, Bonne’s statement is similar to the outgoing superintendent’s alleged reason for resigning.
“I have decided to follow your lead and step aside so that I may freely pursue other career interests,” Bonne’s letter states, “and not become a distraction for the new administration.”
Bonne has been with the district since 2006. He is also a former Rockford Register Star reporter. His resignation is “effective immediately.”
Sheffield takes vacation day
The Rock River Times also attempted to contact LaVonne Sheffield for comment Friday. However, inquiries about reports that she is seeking employment with the Metropolitan School District in Cleveland, Ohio went unanswered.
It was later confirmed that Sheffield was out of the office and had taken a vacation day. According to an automated out-of-office e-mail reply, Sheffield is scheduled back in the office Monday, April 18.
According to statements from the school board, upon leaving District 205, Sheffield will be paid $105,000–half of her annual salary–three months worth of health care benefits and unused vacation and sick days.
Mark Bonne’s Resignation Letter
Dear LaVonne:
Please accept this letter as official notice of my resignation as Chief Communications Officer effective today.
As you know, I am deeply honored to have had the privilege of serving as a member of your Cabinet and working so closely with you over the past two years on behalf of the students of Rockford Public Schools.
In five years, I have worked directly with three superintendents and have been saddened by the departure of each. All of been good people, putting forth their best effort.
My role has been to fully support each superintendent with my best work along whatever course the superintendent charted. I know that I have the capacity to make another such transition, but I’m not sure that is possible in the current climate. For this reason and after considerable soul-searching, I have decided to follow your lead and step aside so that I may freely pursue other career interests and not become a distraction for the new administration.
I wish very much that my departure could coincide with yours. You are aware, however, that I’ve been neglecting some health concerns that demand my attention.
Once again, thank you for the opportunity to work with you and learn from you. Beginnings and endings are often difficult; the middle is usually the best part of anything. I will always reflect fondly upon these two years together, and I trust this is not the end of our relationship but the beginning of a new chapter.
Sincerely,
Mark Bonne

Thanks for digging once again, RRT. We need more investigations not fewer!
Good news!
Two down, more to go!
Sheffield wont be back in her office. My understanding is that her key card to the 4th floor has been de-activated, as of Friday. Good riddance and may the rest of her minions follow suit quickly.
You really should find out what’s really going on around there. What’s the common thread? Who is being investigated and by whom? Mr. Bonne wouldn’t just resign so quickly. He lived thru the Sheffield terror for goodness sake. What could be worse than that? What is the Rockford elite failing to tell the people about the real story on the 4th floor of 201 S. Madison? The District and Sheffield said she’d be around till the end of the month. Her key card deactivated? She won’t be back? Did Sheffield and board members lie about that? What is the truth?
This administration is like a house of cards…
Here’s to a quick exit by the rest of her “crew”!!! Like yesterday…. deactivate all their keycards!!
“I don’t support it!!! I didn’t even know about this meeting. Why didn’t the school district send out letter to parents in the proposed zone”…did they “send out letter to all the parents”…or “let them know of the proposed changes?”
These could have easily been from Rockford parents but they were delivered by parents in Wasilla Alaska. All the way up in Sarah Palin territory…maybe Mark Bonne can find empoloyment there…
What pack of lies they came up with at Tuesday’s board meeting… The board and the public should take a very close look at those expenses. Someone made money buying those summer reading books. Scholastic made a sweet deal.
