Free oak trees available downtown Rockford until 1 p.m.

Rock River Trail officials still have 200 free oak trees available for property owners along the river.
Trees are being distributed at the trolley station next to the Riverview Icehouse until 1 p.m. today, April 16.
While trees are free, there are conditions to the giveaway.
“Farm owners, homeowners and business owners can take them,” Rock River Trail Founder Frank Schier said. “But, trees must be planted within sight of the river.”
Schier said trees consist of red oak, white oak and swamp oak saplings. Trees may be planted in wet and dry soil.
Between Wednesday, April 13 and Friday, April 15, Schier traveled the length of the Rock River and distributed 10,000 saplings in each of the river’s 11 counties. Each county received 910 trees.
“I was pleased to make some good friends and that the trees went quickly,” Schier said. “Before we even returned to Rockford, all but only three counties were out of trees. That’s very positive.”
Schier is also the editor and publisher of The Rock River Times. He founded the Rock River Trail in 2010.
The Riverview Icehouse is at 324 N. Madison St., downtown.
