Cleveland school district passes on LaVonne Sheffield

Nine candidates are still vying for the position of chief executive officer of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, however, outgoing Rockford Public School District 205 Superintendent Dr. LaVonne Sheffield isn’t one of them.
Sheffield recently put in for the job, stating on her application that she left Rockford because of a change in school board leadership and direction.
Sheffield was one of 126 applicants seeking to run the district in the Ohio city where she’s already made headlines.
Sheffield is the former chief of staff and airport director under former Cleveland Mayor Michael White, who was named in a 2005 FBI investigation which linked him to alleged bribery and extortion rings.
According to published reports in Cleveland, a district hiring committee “rejected LaVonne Sheffield, (who will) will step down April 30 as school superintendent in Rockford, Ill., where she clashed with teachers and drew criticism for school closings and other budget cuts.”
The Metropolitan hiring committee also passed on other Rockford-area applicants and former Ohio Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher.
Still in the running for the position are administrators from Colorado, New Orleans, Michigan, Iowa, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Ohio.
The new head of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will replace Eugene Sanders, who retired in February.
