A Real Estate Boot Camp is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 30, largely on the grounds of Garrison Lofts, 1105 N. Court St.
The informational fair—for current and prospective homebuyers, sellers and investors—is presented by the City of Rockford and Rockford Area Realtors.
The event will feature a grand-prize home giveaway.
Steve Bois, CEO of Rockford Area Realtors, explained, “This will be an interactive event with many ways for anyone owning a home, thinking about buying a home or getting ready to sell a home to get the latest information with which to make the right move in the current economy.”
Seven half-hour mini seminars will cover topics about how to sell a home in today’s buyer’s market, what to expect with a foreclosed property or short sale, factors influencing a purchase in the current economy and housing incentive programs.
Other activities include a first-time homebuyer panel, home inspection tours and Realtor “Speed Dating,” in which attendees have 4-minute-long, one-on-one sessions with a Realtor and lender to ask their most pressing home-buying questions.
The home giveaway, at 948 Grant Ave. in Rockford’s historic Signal Hill neighborhood, was purchased by funds available through the City of Rockford as part of the federal government’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program. The majority of rehab work and expense in updating the property is being donated by area building trade and home interior suppliers.
Area residents who don’t own a home are eligible for a chance to win the home. For every seminar they attend at the Boot Camp event, their name will be entered into a drawing to become a Chance Winner. Only 65 Chance Winners will be drawn, each given a house key to try to open the door to the house giveaway. The winner will meet requirements of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. A full set of Home Giveaway Rules & Regulations are at the Rockford Area Realtors’ website, www.OpenHouseCentral.com.
Another significant draw of the event will be the appearance of HGTV’s Chip Wade, a popular star on the highly-rated home remodeling shows Curb Appeal and Designed to Sell. At noon, Wade will lead a walking tour of the Signal Hill neighborhood, giving out tips about making the most of a home’s exterior. At 3 p.m., the event shifts to the Rockford Woman’s Club, 323 Park Ave., in downtown Rockford, for a closing-session keynote about “Designed to Sell,” strategies for quickly moving your house off the market.
“Housing is important to the city of Rockford in many different ways,” said Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey (I). “It still represents the American dream for most of our hard-working citizens, comprising 15 percent of our nation’s Gross Domestic Product. A high level of home ownership with nicely-maintained properties reflects well on the image of our city, provides for stable neighborhood living, and encourages increased investment to the city.”
