Volunteers needed for planting of wildflower seedlings May 7

Natural Land Institute’s (NLI) greenhouse is full of wildflower seedlings, and the group needs help planting them from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 7.
The free, family-friendly event will be at Nygren Wetland Preserve, 3190 W. Rockton Road, Rockton.
Greg Keilback, stewardship director for NLI, is asking people to show up in full force to help.
“Volunteers will be shown how to plant little bluestem grass, grey-headed coneflower and Culver’s root directly into various parts of the preserve,” Keilback said. “Sandhill cranes, eagles and songbirds such as orioles, American redstart and yellow warblers, as well as other wildlife, benefit from the increase in native plant richness.”
Nygren Wetland Preserve is about 1 mile west of Rockton, along the banks of the Pecatonica and Rock rivers. The wetlands at the preserve improve water quality by filtering out pollutants. They keep the water clean for turtles, frogs, mussels and fish. The 721-acre preserve is in a critical migratory bird flyway.
