People in Our Times: Keith senior earns National Merit Scholarship

May 11, 2011

Keith senior Navid Bahmanyar was named a National Merit Scholar for 2011.

“This is a remarkable achievement,” said Dr. Ron Lee, head of Middle and Upper School. “To be among the top 5 percent selected in the entire country really speaks to how hard Navid has worked on his studies.”

More than 1.5 million students in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship competition when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Last fall, Bahmanyar and one other Keith student (Christofer Hamilton) were two of the 16,000 semi-finalists named.

Semi-finalists were the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represented less than 1 percent of the state’s seniors.

To advance to the finalist level, semifinalists had to fulfill additional requirements. Each finalist presented an outstanding academic record; was endorsed and recommended by a school official; earned SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance; and provided an essay describing activities, interests and goals.

Bahmanyar is among nearly 7,800 distinguished high school seniors receiving a National Merit Scholarship.
