Weight loss program Tangerine Wellness motivates participants by paying them to lose weight
Tangerine Wellness, an incentive-based weight management program that has helped Rockford employers and employees since 2006, is now offering its program to individual Rockford residents by paying them to lose weight and keep it off.
The voluntary program is a non-prescriptive weight management program open to any individual 18 or older who wants to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Rockford residents can sign up at tangerinewellness.com/rockford. Cost is $9.99 to participate for four months. The program runs June 7-Sept. 30.
All participants are rewarded by earning points for their weight management success for discounts at participating Rockford merchants. Also, participants can optionally form teams to compete for the greatest percentage of team weight improvement. Team rewards will range from a minimum of $3,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $500 for third. As more people sign up, these reward levels will get larger.
Rockford residents will have access to Tangerine’s online weight management resources, including access to all of the popular weight-loss programs. They’ll be able to track and graph weight progress over time, log food calories eaten and activity calories burned, get nutritionalinformation about foods, and communicate with teammates and other participants.
Individuals also can sign up at FitMe Wellness, a new Rockford-area health and fitness facility at Brynwood Shopping Center, 2595 N. Mulford Road, Rockford. FitMe Wellness is the exclusive measurement partner of Tangerine Wellness and will provide free weigh-in and measurement services.
Employers such as Rockford Acromatic have been trimming health care costs by reducing their employees’ waistlines.
Jim Knutson, risk manager at Rockford Acromatic, said: “Since 2006, we’ve been paying our employees to lose weight and keep it off. Our workforce is healthier, they have been rewarded for their efforts, and they continue to participate and sustain their success on the Tangerine Wellness program even after five years.”
The direct costs associated with obesity and related chronic conditions account for about $113 million a year for the city of Rockford, according to a recent Gallup poll. Rockford has a 22 percent obesity rate, ranking it the 187th most obese metro area in the United States. Reducing this rate to just 15 percent, Rockford would save $37 million a year.
Aaron Day, CEO of Tangerine Wellness, said: “It was only natural for us to offer Tangerine’s program to Rockford residents first. Employers and employees know the program works because they are enjoying the rewards of living a healthier life. Whether you are overweight, at a healthy weight or underweight, we’ve made the Tangerine Wellness program easy, fun and sustainable by encouraging friendly competition and rewarding participants for results.”
