County News: 2010 property tax bills to be mailed Friday, May 13

Online Staff Report

Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen announced today, May 12, that property tax bills for all parcels in Winnebago County will be in the mail Friday, May 13, 2011.

First installment due: Monday, June 13, 2011

Final installment due: Friday, September 2, 2011

Because of various factors, most taxpayers experienced a reduction in their property’s assessed value for 2010. However, the actual tax being paid may show an increase from the previous year, county officials said.

This increase is the result of higher overall tax rates. Individual rates are increased to compensate for the reduction in property values. This is primarily because of weak market conditions and the increasing number of vacant or underused industrial and commercial buildings.

Property owners billed for taxes higher than last year on decreased assessments are encouraged to note the “Taxing Body” rate information on their tax bill in the area under the “Total Tax Due” for the cause of the increase.

Township assessors are available to answer questions about 2010 assessed values.
