I was a steward and a committeeman. But they have outlive usefulness. In trades, they can slow down efficiency, by limiting how many bricks a brick layer must lay in a day, etc., making a job cost more. Their purpose now is to employee as many members as they possibly can, with each doing as little work for the most amount of compensation they can possibly milk out of an employer. It seems that a while ago we entered another whole realm of lacking ethics where it is almost a given that the big guy will try to crush the little guy.
