Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon (D) was in Rockford last week to discuss how the health of the Rock and Kishwaukee tributaries play into her plan to preserve the ecosystem of the Mississippi River.

Simon is the co-chairman of the Mississippi River Coordinating Council. The council met Friday, May 13, at the Burpee Museum of Natural History. Simon, along with Department of Natural Resources Director Marc Miller, and other officials, listened to presentations from local groups aimed at preserving the river system.

Among presenters were Natural Land Institute Executive Director Jerry Paulson, Rock River Trail Founder Frank Schier and Nathan Hill of the Rockford Park District. Each spoke about the Rock River Valley’s efforts to preserve and maintain the Kishwaukee and Rock rivers and the awareness conservation groups share about the state, national and global importance of the waterways.

“The Mississippi River and its tributaries are of vital importance to the ecosystem and economy of Illinois,” Simon said. “I look forward to working with the council to outline goals and initiatives to protect our rivers.”

Established in 2010, the Mississippi River Coordinating Council is charged with coordinating policies and programs promoting the intertwined environmental and economic health of the Mississippi River and its tributaries across the state.
