YouthBuild, AmeriCorps announce week of community service

The Rockford chapters of YouthBuild and AmeriCorps are providing several community service projects May 16-20.
Members of the programs, offered by Comprehensive Community Solutions, Inc., will partner with officials from Tinker Swiss Cottage, Booker T. Washington Community Center, Ellis Heights Weed & Seed and Angelic Organics Learning Center for a week of repairs on area homes and urban agriculture.
Students have been busy kicking off the growing season with the new Hoop House Garden, a community garden near the YouthBuild campus. The garden is part of a citywide program the City of Rockford launched to help provide fresh produce to those in need. AmeriCorps and YouthBuild members will also serve meals at the Rockford Rescue Mission and repair homes in the Ellis Heights Weed & Seed District.
The partnerships are part of AmeriCorps Week.
AmeriCorps is a national network of community-strengthening programs, aimed at helping Americans realize the importance of community service.
YouthBuild Rockford is a highly regarded program that provides low-income and challenged youth opportunities to become productive, self-supporting adults. The programs offer construction trade training while students build a single-family home, participate in peer counseling, job placement and other vocational preparation. Students attend alternative education classes to prepare them to earn a GED.
