Police: Man believed drowned in Rock River has criminal past

The 20-year-old man who police believe drowned in the Rock River Saturday, June 4, has a criminal past, officials said Monday, June 6.

In 2009, Casey Sheets pleaded guilty to aggravated battery of a public official when he tried to run over a police officer. He was released from boot camp in fall 2010.
Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department officials said Sheets got into a physical confrontation with 27-year-old Kristopher Zaugg Saturday while the two were on a pontoon boat ride.
During the altercation, Sheets ended up overboard and was last seen going under water before police were called.
As of this report, there was no sign of Sheets, as rescue teams have been searching the river since approximately 7 p.m., Saturday night.
Zaugg has been charged with two counts of reckless conduct/causing great bodily harm. Both charges are Class 4 felonies.
After a warrant was issued for his arrest, he turned himself in Sunday, June 5.
As of this report, Zaugg remained jailed at the Winnebago County Justice Center.
