Rockford man in custody after possible drowning incident

A Rockford man turned himself in Sunday, June 5, after police alleged he was involved in a possible drowning of another man Saturday, June 4.
Kristopher Alan Zaugg, 27, has been charged with reckless conduct in the incident, which occurred Saturday, June 4, on the Rock River near the 8900 block of S. Main Street.

Deputies from the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene at approximately 7 p.m., in response to a report of a possible drowning.
Investigators say Zaugg was among four people on a pontoon boat, where a physical altercation took place.
During the altercation, 20-year-old Casey Chandler Sheets went overboard and was seen going under water before police were called.
While details of the incident are not clear, officials said they are looking into whether the victim was pushed out of the boat.
Fire and rescue teams continued their search for Sheets through Sunday and were still on the water as of this report.
Zaugg is being held on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court today. Reckless conduct is a Class 4 felony.
