City Council News: Aldermen approve gas station near east side Hilander

Motorists traveling near the intersection of Spring Creek and Mulford roads will soon have a place to stop for gas as the Rockford City Council approved a proposal for a fuel kiosk near the Hilander store Monday night, June 6.
The four-pump station, which will cost approximately $1 million, will be built by Kroger, which operates Hilander supermarkets. It will be installed in the Brynwood Square Shopping Center in the space now occupied by a Harris Bank automated teller machine (ATM).
The project will also include new landscaping and lighting units.
The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 4-1 for the project while the council passed the measure with a 13-1 tally.
The lone no vote came from Ald. Venita Hervey (D-5). However, Hervey later said she meant to vote for the special-use permit but misunderstood discussions, thinking the council wanted to limit the station’s hours of operation.
Kroger plans to install the station this summer. It will be open 24-hours. The Brynwood Square Shopping Center is at 2601 N. Mulford Rd., across from Rockford First Church and Christian Life School.
The Rockford City Council meets in open session every Monday at 6 p.m. Meetings are in Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, downtown.
