Find Your Space: Red Tent events start June 21 at Womanspace
By Gale Ketteler

How many fabulous women and girls can fit inside our Red Tent? Come find out June 21-26 at Womanspace as we honor and celebrate our lives, stories, bodies, art, writing and much more.
This week of special programs and events is inspired by the 1997 book The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, as well as filmmaker Isadora Gabrielle Leidenfrost’s new documentary, Things We Don’t Talk About: Healing Narratives from the Red Tent, to be previewed June 24. More information is available at (815) 877-0118, www.womanspace-rockford.org and www.facebook.com/Womanspace.
During these Red Tent events, Womanspace joins the international movement with celebrations in our new Anjali Pavilion (the dedication is June 9!), plus live readings from our international Red Silk women’s anthology. The Opening Celebration and Labyrinth Overnight Vigil is June 21, with the option of registering for an hour of walking meditation between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. We’ll focus on safety and support for a different group of women around the world each hour, and you can pitch a tent on our prairie to support the walkers.
Two book discussions of The Red Tent, an Ayurveda and Women’s Health Lunch and Learn, Yoga for Women, and Meditation, Mantras and Malas will all be offered. Three local health system professionals host a Women’s Health Issues panel June 23 with the latest clinical research on women and heart disease, sleep disorders, migraine and memory loss. Throughout the week, you can enjoy massage and other pampering, plus make-and-take crafts.
Two art exhibits, Rites of Passage and Red Tent Fiber & Poetry, open June 10 at a special reception sponsored by David Boccignone of Ameriprise Financial, and will be on view during our Red Tent events. Additional programs include a Red Tent Personal Shrine artshop, It’s My Body! girls’ health program with SwedishAmerican Center for Women’s Jane Kiley, NP, and “Healthy? Naturally! Women’s Health Perspectives” with natural approaches to nutrition, stress reduction, pelvic floor concerns, gynecology and childbirth. Kiley also shares the latest info about menopause during “Is It Hot in Here?”
We invite the entire community to our International Festival of Music, Food & Words June 26. Wear ethnic clothing and bring food to share at our multicultural potluck. Pardis will serenade us with the Daf drum, authors will read more from Red Silk, and there will be an open house of women’s businesses and organizations. Contact us for vending fees. That night, the Cakes for the Queen of Heaven class examines The Hebrew Goddess—perfect for a Red Tent finale!
Come for some or all of these activities, and discover your own sacred place at Womanspace. Red Tent events are sponsored by SwedishAmerican Center for Women, Kathy Flanagan of Leadership Communication, Dr. Kimberly Osborne of Rockford Wellness and Diagnostic Center and Lunapads.
Womanspace is proud to again sponsor the Rockford Chamber of Commerce Women in Business Expo & Lunch June 23. Register today to network with local businesswomen, and then hear Amy Millman speak about advancing women-owned businesses.
