Volleyball is an increasingly popular sport. Grade schools have teams starting as early as fourth grade. The local YMCA has hundreds of young boys and girls playing the game. Several different leagues are available for men, women and mixed doubles at a variety of locations indoors and outdoors around the area.
Each and every one of those players could take a lesson from the players who will be taking the court at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., this weekend. The U.S. Men’s National Team, the reigning Olympic champion and fifth ranked in the world, will play two matches against world No. 10 team Poland.
The two teams will square off at 7 p.m., Friday night, June 17, and then again at the same time Saturday night, June 18.
Both teams have played six matches in the 2011 World League Tournament prior to this weekend’s games. The U.S. team has won four and lost two. Poland has won three and dropped three. U.S. beat Poland 3-0 back on May 27 in front of 8,100 fans at the Atlas Arena in Lodz, Poland.
Almost 18,000 fans saw the U.S. team defeat the Brazilian team 4-1 last Sunday, June 12, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Poland defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 last Saturday, June 11, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Advance ticket prices are $25 for courtside seats and $18 for general admission. All tickets increase $3 when purchased at the box office on the day of the event. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.searscentre.com.
