FBI manhunt on for Rockford weight-loss doctor accused of fraud

A nationwide manhunt began Friday, June 17, for popular weight-loss specialist, Dr. Gautam Gupta, after federal investigators served search warrants at all five of his clinics.
Investigators allege Gupta filed insurance claims with Blue Cross/Blue Shield Insurance Company and the state Medicaid program for medical procedures that never took place.

Gupta, 57, is accused of collecting approximately $25 million in fraudulent claims on behalf of patients from June 2001 to January 2010.
Gupta, who owns the well-known Nutrition Clinic, is now on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s list of most-wanted fugitives.
Agents executed search warrants at Gupta’s offices in Chicago, Rockford, Arlington Heights, South Beloit and Naperville Thursday, June 16, and added him to the infamous list of fugitives Friday, FBI spokesmen said.
The case was investigated jointly by the Chicago FBI, Illinois State Police, Medicaid Fraud Control Bureau, and the Office of the Inspector General.
Gupta faces 35 years in prison on charges of mail fraud, health care fraud, and conspiracy.
Gautam Gupta is described as a white male of Middle Eastern descent, 5-foot-5, 160 pounds with graying black hair.
As of this report, Gupta’s whereabouts were unknown. Those close to the case, including Gupta’s wife and Rockford employees, say they haven’t seen the doctor in several days. Gupta could be traveling alone in the Middle East.
