Sisters earn top prize in conservation video contest

Two Rockford students were recognized for their creativity during a recent awards ceremony that celebrated their first-place energy conservation video.

Katie Gorzek, a student at the Auburn Freshman Campus, and Sarah Gorzek, a seventh grader at Eisenhower Middle School, collaborated on a 1-minute video that reminds viewers that small efforts, such as riding a bike, unplugging unused electronics or air drying your clothes can reduce energy waste and help the environment.

The video, which features an original song performed by the girls, earned top honors in the “Show Us How You Shine Like an ENERGY STAR” contest.

“A lot of companies are focusing on going green, and people are searching for ways to conserve energy,” Gorzek said. “We wanted to combine all of those ideas and put them together in a video that is all about being conscious of the energy we use.”

This is the second year in a row the duo has won first place.
