‘Gospel Explosion’ honors Thomas Dorsey July 1-2
Sounds Of Good News (SOGN) Productions will present its Third Annual “Gospel Explosion” in celebration of the birthday and legacy of “Father of Gospel,” Dr. Thomas A. Dorsey (July 1, 1889-Jan. 23, 1993). He was the composer of historic songs such as “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” “Peace in the Valley” and “The Lord Will Make a Way Somehow.”
As Wikipedia states: “As formulated by Dorsey, gospel music combines Christian praise with the rhythms of jazz and the blues. … Dorsey was the music director of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago from 1932 until the late 1970s. … In 2002, the Library of Congress honored his album Precious Lord: New Recordings of the Great Songs of Thomas A. Dorsey (1973), by adding it to the United States National Recording Registry.”
The event will be three-fold, beginning with a “Gospel Concert” at 7 p.m., Friday, July 1 (Dr. Dorsey’s actual birthday) at First Church of God, 484 Ottawa Ave., Freeport. This concert will feature the “Inner Circle” Gospel Vocal Trio (with Elder Carl Cole, Evangelist Dianna Cole and Msn. Bobbie Collins).
The celebration continues Saturday, July 2, with a “Gospel Workshop” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, including an opportunity to sing in the Workshop Choir, and concludes with a “Celebration of Gospel” service at 7 p.m.
SOGN will welcome regional talent and musical representations from your church, featuring the Workshop Choir. Presenters are Pastor Kevin M. Cooley Sr. of First Church of God, and Minister of Music, Elder Carl Cole. The event is free to the public, except for a nominal workshop registration fee for interested participants.
Donations will benefit the Youth Outreach Ministries of SOGN. For more information, call Dianna Cole at (815) 914-1487, e-mail MsCSOGN@aol.com or visit www.soundsofgoodnews.com.
