Book explores history of SwedishAmerican Hospital

In conjunction with its 100th anniversary, SwedishAmerican Health System has published It Began with a Dollar, a 200-page book about the organization’s history. Written by Paul Greenland, SwedishAmerican’s manager of marketing and public information, the book is organized into eight chapters, including Origins, Growth & Expansion, Leaders, Medical Pioneers, Friends & Colleagues, The Patient Experience, Education & Learning and Quality.
“Writing SwedishAmerican’s history involved conducting interviews with many retired doctors, nurses and employees, and searching through thousands of old photographs and documents,” said Greenland. “Although the factual information is interesting, it’s the stories about people that really bring our history to life.”
In the book, readers will learn about struggles that have been endured and contributions that have been made by SwedishAmerican’s people over the last century. It Began with a Dollar includes fascinating stories about the Great Pandemic, the polio epidemic, the Belvidere tornado, the arrival of open-heart surgery and more. The book also profiles many of the medical trailblazers who paved the way for modern health care delivery.
It Began with a Dollar costs $24.95 and is available for purchase on the SwedishAmerican Hospital campus, at both hospital gift shop locations. Proceeds will benefit the SwedishAmerican Heritage Center, which is on the first floor of the hospital (near the Heart Hospital entrance). The Heritage Center, which opened June 6, the actual date of SwedishAmerican’s 100th anniversary, allows visitors to experience SwedishAmerican’s history through fascinating interactive exhibits and artifacts.
