Rockford children benefit from summer food program

Through Rockford’s Human Services Department and Lifescape’s Community Kitchen component, more than 3,000 kids are being served a nutritious lunch and snack this summer.
The city’s Summer Food Program is designed to provide healthy food for kids between the ages of 3 and 18. More than 16,000 lunches are prepared and delivered weekly as part of the program.
The food is prepared at Lifescape’s Kilburn Avenue kitchen facility and then delivered to 32 sites around the city, many of them schools and community centers. With guidance from the USDA, which provides funding for the program, the menu is decidedly healthier with fruit and grain bars, fruits, vegetables and juices.
This project also has allowed Lifescape to add as many as 25 temporary employees to its staff.
The Summer Food Program will run through mid-August.
