State Police: 17 area traffic deaths in first half of 2011

The Illinois State Police District 16 released statistics related to traffic fatalities from January to June 2011 Wednesday, July 13.
According to Lieutenant Martin Zamudio, District 16 recorded 17 deaths related to traffic crashes during the first half of 2011.
“Unfortunately, this is an increase compared to the 11 traffic fatalities seen in the first 6 months of 2010,” Zamudio stated.
Crash reports show that of the 17 traffic deaths there have been 14 vehicle occupants killed, with the other 3 deaths coming from motorcycle, ATV and bicycle involved crashes. Ten of the traffic deaths have occurred in Winnebago County, 4 in Boone County, 3 in Stephenson County and none in Jo Daviess County. Twelve of the crashes occurred between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Top contributing causes of the fatal crashes are speeding, failing to stop at stop signs and improper lane usage.
“We need everyone to take a look at why they speed and disregard traffic control devices,” Zamudio said. “Many times it is unintentional and the result of a distraction from within the vehicle such as a cell phone, radio or passengers.
“Obeying speed limits and traffic control devices, as well as limiting cell phone use should not be seen as an inconvenience, but something to help keep you safe and alive, as defensive driving needs to be a priority for all motorists.”
District 16 includes Jo Daviess, Stephenson, Winnebago and Boone Counties.
