Sweeny’s faulty reasoning on casinos

Chuck Sweeny’s equation that the Cubs fan is just as sick as the compulsive gambler does not add up. How many Cubs fans are losing their homes and families due to their fascination with the game? I knew Atlantic City before and after casinos came, and the difference was stark.
Having played violin behind some of the big shows that came to Atlantic City, I could see the difference. Instead of vibrant beaches full of people enjoying the outdoors, we saw pale workers in an environment that knew neither night nor day. Sure, the casinos were a draw for crowds that bought, but the cost was in terms of a sicker community. Through the centuries, regions and villages have had to “reinvent” themselves to develop robust economies. The casino industry, like pornography, feeds on the basest desires of people and does not build on healthy activities. The pattern of greed, beginning with the “leaders” of our region only eyeing the potential income, works all the way through the community, and if we are saddled with casinos, will produce more of the same. Is that what built this country? I suggest that we all get back to work and concentrate on building a diverse environment that supports more positive lifestyles.
