Rockford F.I.R.E. track meet July 16 at Guilford High School

The Rockford F.I.R.E. (Fostering Identity, Recreation, and Education) summer track and field program will host the Third Annual Invitational on Saturday, July 16.
The meet starts at starts at 8 a.m. at Guilford High School, 5620 Spring Creek Rd., where up to 350 boys and girls ages 5-18 from northern Illinois will compete in eight age divisions.
Among teams scheduled to compete are Illinois Jets, Golden Eagles, DeKalb Huskies, and several teams from the Chicago area. Field events will include long jump, high jump, shot put, and discus. Running events will include individual and relay races.
A presentation will also honor coach William Cossey for his many years of service to the sport of track and field in the Rockford community.
Admission is $5. Children 5 and under are free. A concession stand will be available.
The F.I.R.E. summer program consists of two levels of participation. The Jr. F.I.R.E., for children ages 3-5, introduces young athletes to fundamentals, while F.I.R.E. for youth ages 5-18 offers a higher level of competition.
The program is administered by the Rockford Park District and Rockford Public School District 205. It aims to engage young people in a positive experience and use track and field to promote recreation, education, leadership, community service, and self-esteem. Highly qualified coaches provide individual and group instruction.
