Softball: Sportscore softball diamonds to be renamed after Robert Papich
Sportscore One’s softball diamonds have been renamed in honor of Rockford Park District staff member Robert F. Papich.
Papich began his 35-year career with the Rockford Park District in 1961, but is best known for his passion and commitment to Sportscore One.
Papich is credited with being the first to bring prestigious sports tournaments to Rockford, and positioning the Sportscore One Complex to help Rockford become the amateur sports capital of the Midwest.
A committee of Papich fans envisions a special welcome sign at the entrance to the softball diamonds at Sportscore One. The sign will have his face and name on it, and be hung over the bridge to the softball facility where Papich personally greeted so many players and spectators for years. The sign will be placed near a boulder already on site that also displays a special plaque in Papich’s honor.
A citizens’ group plans to raise enough donations to cover the cost of the “Papich Fields” sign so it can be installed by Aug. 1.
