Online Staff Report
Wednesday evening, July 20, a 15-year-old youth was grazed by a bullet at an open gym evening basketball program at Lewis Lemon School, 1993 Mulberry St., Rockford. The youth was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Monday through Thursday evening program, which is operated by the Rockford Park District, is open to boys ages 13 to 19 and included approximately 20 youth who were registered for the program.
Park District officials said the program is supervised and operated in a “controlled environment,” with participants needing to sign in and out each evening with staff allowing entrance in and out of the building.
Park District Executive Director Tim Dimke said: “This open-gym program has been around for over 18 years without an incident. Park District police are working closely with the Rockford Police Department on the investigation. We are reviewing all safety procedures. Additional security will be added, and programs will go on as scheduled.”
