Biking: BMX tournament in Rockford contending for ‘World’s Best Sporting Event’
By Doug Halberstadt
Nearly every day there is something new on the Internet that you can vote on and help win money or be named the best at. One of the most noted was when Pepsi Cola was giving away millions of dollars recently to a variety of causes across the country based on people voting for their favorites.
Now, the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is seeking your help in getting an event held here in Rockford last month named the World’s Best Sporting Event.
Sports Travel magazine has named the 2011 American Bicycle Association’s (ABA) Midwest BMX Nationals competition, held here in Rockford June 17-19, as one of their finalists as the best single amateur sporting event in the world.
The BMX competition is one of the final nominees in Sports Travel magazine’s 2011 Sports Travel Awards — the leading peer-based awards program in the sporting events industry. The program allows web users to select the best events at the amateur, collegiate and professional levels by going to www.SportsTravelMagazine.com and clicking on the “Vote Now” button. Voting closes at midnight, Aug. 15.
This year, more than 1,000 professional and amateur racers came to town to compete for national rankings on one of the best bicycle motocross tracks in the country. This was the 24th consecutive year the event was held in the Rockford region. In addition to the 1,000 racers, another 4,000 family, friends and fans attended the competition, generating an estimated $280,000 for area restaurants and businesses.
The 2011 Sports Travel Awards will be presented at the TEAMS ’11 Conference and Expo, the leading sporting events trade show, in Las Vegas Oct. 3-6.
