Ed Wells misses the point

Ed Wells is once again banging the drum for applying Band-Aids to the symptoms of society’s ills, rather than doing surgery on the cause. The Rockford Register Star ran a headline that read, “Arrest rate is 20 percent for county’s black youth.” Mr. Wells waited and waited for the community to raise its voice in a single chord of excoriation of this statistic. Apparently, Ed believes this situation is the fault of the public at large, not the perpetrators of the crimes for which they were arrested.

Mr. Wells doesn’t seem to understand that the arrest rate is merely a result of actions on the part of individuals within the community who are black. If he really wants to see that number diminished, he would do well to start promoting concepts like individual responsibility, accountability, self-sufficiency, work ethic, family responsibility, education and self-respect.

If and until the behavior of the black people who are being arrested converts to strictly legal conduct, the arrest rate will remain the same, or grow. Treat the cause, Ed,  not the symptom.
