Municipalities join Rockford Casino Coalition effort

Municipalities throughout the Rockford region joined forces to send a message to Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) that a casino in Rockford would benefit all of Winnebago County.
Leaders from the City of Loves Park, Village of Machesney Park, Village of Pecatonica, City of Rockford and Winnebago County held a news conference to show their unity and announce their joint support for Senate Bill 0744, which opens the door for a casino in Rockford. Additionally, the community of South Beloit passed a measure approving a resolution in support of a casino.
Community leaders point out that just building a casino would generate an estimated 300 construction jobs, employing workers from throughout the county.
Once a casino is operating, there would be an additional 1,300 jobs. Some would be low-skill jobs like cleaning crews and wait staff. Others would require more training like management, accounting and marketing.
It’s also estimated a casino would generate $7 to $12 million in revenue that could be strategically leveraged for economic development.
Loves Park Mayor Darryl Lindberg said: “The economic impact of a casino isn’t restricted by political boundaries. Every community will benefit from the jobs and revenue generated by a casino in Rockford.”
The municipalities join a growing list of casino supporters, including the union and trade associations, the tourism industry, the arts community and local media leaders.
The Rockford Casino Coalition was formed in support for the gaming expansion bill (S.B. 0744) and encourages the governor to sign the bill. The coalition’s founding partners represent more than 1,500 organizations and their 60,000 employees.
