Johnny Moore Jr., 22, was sentenced to 36 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for two counts of aggravated battery to a child.
Moore pled guilty Jan. 27 to two counts of aggravated battery to a child and was sentenced to 18 years for both counts.
Nov. 30, 2009, police officers were dispatched to Rockford Memorial Hospital in reference to an unresponsive 1-year-old child in the emergency room with bruises all over her body. According to Department of Health and Human Services staff and police officers who spoke with medical staff, the injuries to the infant included a broken left leg, a broken left hip, a lacerated liver and a lacerated pancreas. The infant had to undergo emergency surgery and was in intensive care with life-threatening injuries.
Through their investigation, officers learned Moore had been with the infant prior to her injuries occurring. Officers learned that the infant’s mother, Heidi Carter, had left the defendant, her boyfriend, alone with her two children and found the infant injured when she returned.
Carter then brought the infant to the emergency room. A detective interviewed the defendant, who admitted that while he was getting the infant dressed, he pushed her leg back and heard a pop. The defendant further stated that after that, he stood the infant on the kitchen floor and she fell over. The defendant admitted he then did a knee drop on the infant’s chest using the full weight of his body.
The infant was born Sept. 15, 2008, and she was 1 year old at the time of the offense. Moore was 21 at the time of the offense.
Aggravated battery to a child is a class X felony with a sentencing range of six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for both counts. Truth in sentencing applies, in which the defendant will serve 85 percent of his sentence with three years mandatory supervised release.
