Volatile organic chemicals detected in two private wells in Winnebago County

Thursday, July 28, the Winnebago County Health Department (WCHD) was notified by the Illinois Department of Public Health of two private wells serving different homes on the same street north of Auburn Street and west of Central Avenue with volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) in the drinking water.
“At this point in time, we do not know for sure how extensive this groundwater contamination problem is,” said Larry Swacina, director of Environmental Health Services WCHD. “Our department is working in partnership with the Illinois Department of Public Health to evaluate the scope of the problem and to inform residents of the health risks. We are in the process of evaluating the extent and direction of flow of the VOC contaminate plume in the groundwater.”
To this end, WCHD has circulated door-to door fliers in the neighborhood the two wells were identified. An informational meeting with residents is being held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2, at the Northwest Community Center, 1325 N. Johnston Ave., Rockford. City water is available on the street where the contamination has been found.
