Sustainable weed control workshops Aug. 10, 25
Grow a healthy garden and a healthy environment through sustainable vegetable gardening practices. University of Illinois Extension is presenting two programs to promote weed control (Aug. 10) and insect and disease prevention (Aug. 25) by using sustainable practices in the vegetable garden. Programs will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at U of I Extension, 1040 N. Second St., Rockford. Register at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/jsw/ or by calling (815) 986-4357.
Weed Control in the Home Vegetable Garden: Sustainable techniques to control weeds in the home vegetable garden using non-chemical practices including mulches, row cover and more. Weeds compete with your vegetable plants robbing them of water and nutrients. This program will provide the home gardener with the tools needed to control weeds in the vegetable garden. Presented Aug. 10. Fee is $5 per person.
Insect and Disease Prevention and Control in the Home Vegetable Garden: Control insects and disease in the home vegetable garden without the use of chemicals. Alternatives to the use of insecticides and fungicides will be shared. Participants will also learn how to encourage beneficial insects and natural enemies to those common garden pests. Presented Aug. 25. Fee is $25 per person.
Both programs will be presented by University of Illinois Extension Local Food Systems and Small Farms Educator Maurice Ogutu, Ph.D. Maurice Ogutu provides leadership in local food systems and small farms programs in northwestern Illinois for landowners, commercial growers, and consumers. His area of focus includes sustainable local food production, marketing, delivery of nutritious foods, organic and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plant protection systems, and small farm programs with emphasis on environmental stewardship and economic sustainability.
