Thanks, Doug Halberstadt, for speaking up

August 3, 2011

I applaud Doug Halberstadt for taking a stand on the inappropriate team name “Young Guns.” Some might say this is no big deal, and my guess is that probably none of the kids on the team will ever turn out to be a homicidal felon. But it certainly sets the wrong tone for a youth team. There are plenty of “cool” team names that would project a more positive image and create the sense of unity that’s so important to success in sports. Thanks again to Doug for helping us stop and think about the impact of words and symbols.

I guess I would fall into the category that believes that says this is no big deal. Does this mean we should do away with with all animal names such as Cougar, Panther, Lions, etc., because it might turn all team members into predatory killers?

I look back at Chief Illinwek’s demise at the the Unniversity of Illinois because of the opinions of a few. For over 80 years the Chief was a symbol of the fighting Illini and its fighting spirit yet all that is gone,,,and for what?

I think that by even responding to this article places me in yet another category along with Mr. Halberstadt in that do not have anything else to do.
