Lottery winner revealed: David Ellis of Rockford wins $1,000 a week for life

A Rockford resident who works at a local gum packing facility has become the newest winner of the Illinois Lottery’s Cash for Life instant game.
David Ellis, of Rockford, won $1,000 a week, every week, for life. He is the second Rockford-area resident to win a top prize in one of the Illinois Lottery’s Cash for Life series of games. In May, Dan Kaiser, a Machesney Park man, won $500 a week for life.
Ellis does not have any big plans for his winnings. “I want to save it. Hang on to it for a while,” he said. He plans to keep working at his current job and enjoy being one of the game’s big winners.
Aug. 10, the Illinois Lottery presented Ellis with an oversized check of $1,000 a week for life at Central Park Tap, 3523 Auburn St., where he purchased the ticket. Central Park Tap will receive a 1 percent bonus of $7,600 for selling the winning ticket. The bonus is based on the minimum 20-year payout.
The Illinois Lottery’s Cash for Life game launched in April and offers players the chance to win $500, $1,000 or $2,500 every week for the rest of their lives. The top prize amount depends on whether the player plays a $1, $2 or $5 instant ticket.
“The Rockford area, like the rest of the state, has really taken to this new game,” said Jodie Winnett, acting superintendent of the Illinois Lottery. “Mr. Ellis is the second winner in the area, and who knows, maybe there are more? We enjoy coming to Rockford to celebrate with our winners, and we look forward to seeing more of them soon.”
Founded in 1974, the Illinois Lottery has contributed more than $16 billion to the state Common School Fund to assist K-12 public schools, as well as the Capital Fund. Players must be at least 18 years old. For more details, visit www.illinoislottery.com [1].
