School board rehires 10 of 99 paraprofessionals laid off in July, libraries to be open five days a week

Rockford Board of Education voted 5-2 Tuesday, Aug. 9, to rehire 10 of the 99 paraprofessionals who were laid off in July.
Paraprofessionals help staff the school district’s elementary libraries. Under the original plan, elementary libraries would have been open one or two days per week. The rehiring of 10 paraprofessionals means elementary libraries will be open five days per week.
The approved library plan also puts back to work five librarians, who will work at the middle and high schools.
According to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 692, most paraprofessionals being laid off make less than $10 per hour and get paid only for six hours per day, even though they often work longer.
AFSCME held an information picket prior to the Aug. 9 Board of Education meeting.
The rehiring of the 10 paraprofessionals and five librarians will add more than $700,000 to the district’s budget. Prior to the Aug. 9 meeting, District 205 reported it was $1.3 million away from meeting its budget.
The board also approved Aug. 9 the hiring of Youth Services Network for truancy and attendance intervention and 11 social workers.
